Changes for the 1984 model year were significant. Power output was increased on the 5-speed models to 119 kW (160 hp; 162 PS) and 163 lb?ft (221 N?m) of torque. The increase was achieved by a mixture of a redesigned intake manifold with “D”-shaped intake runners and an increase in compression ratio to: 9.2:1. Another notable change in the 5-speed models was the switch to a 4.30:1 gear ratio in the rear differential.
