(BMW i4) The production model is based on the modular CLAR platform to keep costs low and volume-production attainable. The connected grille design of the concept was abandoned after receiving feedback that it “wasn’t considered a BMW kidney grille anymore.” It is expected to be closely related to the G22 4 Series Gran Coupe, but may sit higher to allow space for batteries above the axles (rather than just between them).
The electric motor, power electronics, charging unit and high-voltage battery have been entirely newly developed as the i4 is one of the first application of BMW’s fifth-generation eDrive system. A notable technical feature of the i4’s powertrain concerns its packaging. The electric motor, transmission and power electronics are all contained in a single component, which allows for a higher efficiency of energy conversion.
The i4 features the latest battery cell technology, which is designed in-house with a view to range and optimized energy density. The batteries used in the i4 have a higher number of cells per module, a reduced number of components, a more compact design and increased flexibility with regard to their geometry.
The fifth-generation eDrive system supports up to 150 kW DC fast charging. The first generation RAV4, known as the XA10 series was constructed on a unique platform that shared Carina and Corolla elements. It launched in Japan in May 1994. Design and development commenced in 1989 under code-name 153T, with design approval and start of production development in the second half of 1991 on the 3-door version and in 1993 for the 5-door version.
